When we first realized the extent of Jonalyn’s disability, it was a very difficult time. We had a great deal of mourning to do. We grieved for the child we thought we would have that would never be. Living in a state of denial, we grew frustrated with her lack of academic progress. Then one dear friend put it all in perspective for me. She said that the most important thing for our children to learn is to love the Lord. Even if they don’t know their ABC’s, can’t count past 20, can’t identify more than a few colors, if they call Jesus their Savior, they have learned all they need to know.
Two and a half years later, we are seeing the fruit of our labors. She now has a buddy in Sunday school, someone to work one-on-one with her in class to help her understand the lessons. We read a Bible story to her nightly, pray with her, sing with her, talk to her about God. She has blossomed. She will proudly tell anyone who will listen to her, “Jesus lubs me!” Last night I began to sing the song, “Jesus Loves Me”. She could really belt out, “Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me. The Bible tells me so.”
Oh, how beautiful. Oh, how sweet. She truly is learning the one and only important thing in life.

How true!! We live in a society that puts academic ability first and never even thinks of God at all.
