Jaime Jo Wright is our guest today.
She wrote a book called The Reckoning at Gossamer Pond, and she’s here to share the story behind her story.
For over a century, the town of Gossamer Grove has thrived on its charm and midwestern values, but Annalise Forsythe knows painful secrets, including her own, hover just beneath the pleasant faade. When a man is found dead in his run-down trailer home, Annalise inherits the trailer, along with the pictures, vintage obituaries, and old revival posters covering its walls. As she sorts through the collection, she’s wholly unprepared for the ramifications of the dark and deadly secrets she’ll uncover.
A century earlier, Gossamer Grove has been stirred into chaos by the arrival of controversial and charismatic twin revivalists. The chaos takes a murderous turn when Libby Sheffield, working at her father’s newspaper, receives an obituary for a reputable church deacon hours before his death. As she works with the deacon’s son to unravel the mystery behind the crime, it becomes undeniably clear that a reckoning has come to town–but it isn’t until another obituary arrives that they realize the true depths of the danger they’ve waded into.
Two women, separated by a hundred years, must uncover the secrets within the borders of their own town before it’s too late and they lose their future–or their very souls.

What inspired you to write this book?
Thank you so much, Liz, for hosting me here on your blog!! I am a huge fan of yours and so I may be having a bit of a fan-girl moment here. (Please pause to allow me to compose myself).
I’m certainly thrilled to be chatting about my new novel The Reckoning at Gossamer Pond. This book was born out of a rather morbid thought I had one night years ago as to how creepy it would be if you opened up the newspaper only to read your own obituary. Then I started wondering why anyone would be that sadistic to do such a thing, and started ruminating on the idea of someone who needed to make their vengeance public. Like a purging, so to speak. To find justice when God hasn’t meted it out Himself. That sent me on a study of old-time evangelists and how they held tent revivals and sometimes entire towns were reformed. And then, the book came alive to me.
However, in all of my creepy mysteries, I find it important to have thematic elements that can touch our lives and bring the reality of faith and a relationship with God into focus. Considering the story, the resounding word in my mind was “grace”. Not just grace from God, but also, extending grace to each other. Grace is being given something we don’t deserve. None of us deserve forgiveness from God, and in reality, often we don’t deserve it from each other either. But the opposite of grace, is bitterness and vengeance which destroys not only the object of our offense, but also ourselves. The outcome is not beautiful. It is dark.
So The Reckoning at Gossamer Pond became a marriage of grace and exiting that darkness and finding the astonishing and bittersweet message of forgiveness and beginning again.
I really hope that in between the pages of mysterious entertainment, a swoony hero or two, some strong but floundering heroines, you’ll also discover the beautiful mystery that is truly Grace.
Your book sounds like a riveting read! Thanks for sharing the story behind your story.
