This week’s word is: cacophony.

Meaning: cacophony (kah-KOF-ah-nee) — 1. jarring, discordant sound; dissonance. 2. the use of harsh or discordant sounds in literary composition

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE saying this word. It’s so fun. I use it often. Cacophony. With Jonalyn’s new keyboard, we often have cacophony in our house – the keyboard, the piano, the TV and the kids’ radios all going at the same time. Sometimes I have to yell for quiet. Guess I contribute to the cacophony 😉 Someday, sooner rather than later, our house will be all too quiet, so I try to enjoy it.

 

I use cacophony in my writing, as the second definition says. One line from a book that will never see the light of day: Screams split the Sunday silence. Love the sound of it, the dissonance. Yes, it was at a very tense point in the book. That’s what makes being a writer so fun. You get to play with words all day. Or does that make me strange??

I have turned the meaning of cacophony on it’s head. I think all the songs of the different birds are a cacophony – but a beautiful one. One of my favorite things to do in the spring is to take a long walk and listen to the cardinals and the meadowlarks and the wax wings all chirping at the same time. So gorgeous.
