I’m so thrilled to have my friend and wonderful critique partner, Jennifer Cary, as our guest on the blog this week. She’s written a fabulous and fascinating trilogy, The Crockett Chronicles. Let’s find out a little more about the books.
Once upon a time a king played matchmaker. And an American dynasty was born. But before it made it to the crumbling walls of the Alamo, a lot had to happen. Follow the stories of three couples, direct ancestors of Davy Crockett and see how it all began.
Sounds so intriguing. What led you to write the stories?
This is a little different because I am launching all three of my Crockett Chronicles trilogy this month on Kindle as a box set collection instead of just one book. The funny thing is, if someone were to read them straight through, it would be a snapshot of my writing journey.
I started out wanting to write about Davy Crockett’s great, great, great grandparents since they were the first Crocketts of the lineage and because they are ten generations back from me. That book, now called The Patriarch, was trial and error with a major learning curve. But after I typed THE END, I wondered if I could do it again. So, I began The Sojournersabout the next generation of Crocketts who brought the family to North America. Because I had learned, it went a faster, had more depth, and was a bigger story.
Then life got in the way. Both manuscripts sat on a shelf for over a decade until our friend and fellow Pencildancer, Jennifer Crosswhite, convinced me to dig them out and get them edited. She had one other thing to say—trilogies sell better so write the next book.
I did. But where the other books took years, The Prodigal‘s first draft was finished in ten weeks. And it’s clear when reading the story that my education continues. As much as I love all the characters, I have to admit, I think I did my best writing with the third book. I still have lots to learn and keep practicing the craft, but it’s fun to see how far I’ve come. I hope readers of The Crockett Chronicles collection will agree.
