It’s so much fun to have a romantic suspense author with us this week. Please help me to give a warm welcome to Laurie Wood. Before we jump in, here’s a little bit about her book Northern Deception.
After a savage attack in university, Kira Summers fled to northern Canada and her work as a polar bear scientist. When her brother dies in a mysterious car crash, she returns home to bury him and pack his belongings. Unaware she’s carrying evidence someone’s willing to kill for, she must rely on the one person she never thought she’d see again.
Lukas Tanner, a single father of a special need’s toddler, moved to Churchill five years ago. The owner of a wilderness tour company, he and his daughter lead a simple life. But when Kira comes crashing back into his world that’s over. Now, they must confront a merciless killer as their past and present collide in a deadly race against time.
That sounds fantastic! What inspired you to write the book?
I set my romantic suspense NORTHERN DECEPTION in a small sub-arctic Canadian town because polar bears are a Canadian icon. I loved researching Churchill, Manitoba, polar bears and the conservation efforts to preserve them.
But the main “story behind the story” is how my two main characters evolved as I wrote. I was a police officer in the mid-1980’s so I started with a Royal Canadian Mounted Police Officer hero. I figured a “Mountie was also a Canadian icon and might hook an editor or agent’s attention.
I envisioned my heroine jumping up from a restaurant meal and walking out on the hero after he proposed to her. And I thought, what would make a woman do that? At that point, I didn’t have her as a polar bear scientist. But once I came up with the “WHY” of her painful story, the “WHO” of the hero transformed.
He wasn’t a police officer anymore. He became a spoiled rich kid who’d had every advantage in life. A lifelong Christian who’d been raised with all the answers to life but hadn’t tested those “answers” until real life hit him in the face.
Before you say, “Well, HE doesn’t sound like much of a hero!” remember that heroes aren’t all alpha males who carry guns and can fight off three bad guys at once. Real heroes are the guys who learn from their mistakes. Who fall down and get up again even if they fall more than once.
So, why did my heroine not want to marry this guy in the first place? Well, you’ll have to read the book to find out. She has her reasons: fear, shame, a huge secret. And when she ends up with something in her possession that other people are willing to kill her for, things take a dangerous and dark turn.
Laurie Wood is a military wife who’s lived across Canada. She and her husband have raised two wonderful children with Down Syndrome to adulthood, and their son and daughter are a wonderful blessing to their lives. Her family lives in central Canada with a menagerie of rescue dogs and cats. If the house were bigger, no doubt they’d have more.

I’ve been to Canada several times and have always enjoyed my visits. My favorite was Niagara Falls! So beautiful, on both the Canadian and American side.
Laurie Wood says
Hello Elizabeth! I’ve been to Niagara Falls a few times and it is truly magnificent. We spent a week at the Great Wolf Lodge there in 2012 with our kids and had a marvelous time between everything the Lodge had to offer, as well as introducing them to the Falls, wax museums (my personal favourite) and all the shops and other attractions. It’s like a mini-Disney for adults. I’m so glad you enjoyed visiting Canada. We’re a great travel bargain given the exchange rate between our two countries!
MS Barb says
Manitoba, on a fishing trip! It was beautiful! (I was born & raised in MN, so I love the North!) (live in OH now)
Laurie Wood says
Ms Barb, we have a lot of “fishing tourists” in Manitoba! I think I read somewhere that we have 110,000 lakes in Manitoba, and some of the best sport fishing in the world. I love it here because it’s not completely flat and we have some trees. We did live in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan for a year and a half, and I loved that too but it’s completely flat to the horizon. And to drive across the province seems endless! Great for farming, not so great to stay awake at the wheel.

The farthest North I’ve been is Las Vegas! I’m a native Floridian, and haven’t been out of the States, and haven’t been to too many of those!
Laurie Wood says
Hi Trudy,
My grandparents retired to Orlando, Florida so I’ve been there, Tampa and Daytona over the years. I wouldn’t be able to survive the heat! Heat isn’t my thing and I suffered from it when we took a Caribbean cruise once. We did win a trip to Las Vegas in the late 1990’s (the exact date escapes me, but I do remember it was pre-military and when my husband was in sales. He had to do the most amount of mortgages in a six month period or something. Anyway, we did a Thursday-Sunday package in the green MGM Grand hotel and had a blast. We went through all the new hotels and saw a couple of magic shows. I wanted to go back for our 25th anniversary but we didn’t get there. That was our one and only time in Vegas.
Trudy says
I’ve only been to Vegas the one time, too. The doctor I worked for at the time took all of the staff for a Friday-Sunday visit. We stayed at the Wynn, first year it opened! We saw a Cirque du soleil show. The only thing I had to pay for was the souvenirs I brought home! I’d like to go back so that I could see Hoover Dam and to go the Grand Canyon. I did go to the Bellagio to watch one of the water shows, though.
Laurie Wood says
My husband saw the Hoover Dam when he was down on a work trip, but we’ve never seen the Grand Canyon. That’s a bucket list item! And we love Cirque du Soleil shows. They usually come to our city once a year with one of their smaller shows and we take our kids because they just adore the acrobatics. It’s an amazing organization.
Thanks so much for visiting this week, ladies!
