Davalynn Spencer is our guest today.
She wrote a book called Snow Angel. She’s here to share the story behind her story.
As a child, she lost something precious at Christmas. Twenty years later, she’s about to lose her heart.
Lena Carver works as her physician brother’s medical assistant, housekeeper, and cook despite her disfigurement from a childhood accident. Each year, the Christmas holidays come with contradictions—cherished memories of a mysterious encounter and painful recollections of a great loss. She lives with the belief that she is beyond love’s reach, until a dark-eyed cowboy arrives broken, bruised, and bent on changing her mind.
Wil Bergman wakes in a stranger’s house with a busted leg, a bullet-creased scalp, and no horse. Trail-weary, robbed, and penniless, his dreams and plans for a future are suddenly unattainable. Forced to recuperate in the home of a country doctor, he finds himself at the mercy of a surgeon whose sister’s healing touch has power to stitch up his lonely heart and open his eyes to the impossible.

What inspired you to write this book?
A couple of years ago as I was cleaning up left-over Christmas wrapping paper, I came across a scrap of flat, folded paper – the kind that didn’t come on a long smooth roll. I almost threw it away, but instead, I evened up the edges and started to slip it into a drawer full of tissue, gift tags, and ribbon.
That’s when a scene on the paper caught my eye.
The white paper was covered with whimsical, childlike drawings of snowmen, clumps of forest, and people skiing or sledding. At the bottom edge of a grouping of trees, there was a simple drawing of a snow angel lying sideways to give the impression of being made in the snow. But what surprised me even more, were little footprints leading away from it, and just beyond them, a real angel – real in the cartoonish sense of the drawings – sneaking away into the trees.
Suddenly, I knew I had a story.
It took me only a year and a half to decide if the setting should be contemporary or historical. Most of that time was spent on other book manuscripts and life in general, but last spring I followed the advice I give aspiring writers and just started writing. That’s when I met Wil and Lena, and Lena’s brother, Tay. And the dog. Oh, the dog. There is something delightfully mysterious about the dog, but I don’t want to give anything away.
Of course, the story is a romance because that’s what I write. But it’s also full of hope and second chances and what-ifs – perfect for the time of year that we celebrate angelic songs, God’s great love-gift, and “impossible” scenarios.
Sounds like a lovely story! Thanks for sharing.

I always enjoy Christmas stories! Also, the country doctor angle was intriguing to me, as I come from a ranching area and my g-grandfather was a country doctor back in the early 1900’s.
