Dutch wooden shoes are known as klompen. Kind of sounds like the noise they make when you walk with them on a hard surface – klomp, klomp, klomp. I have seen a klompendans at the Dutch festival held every year in Cedar Grove, Wisconsin. This traditional Dutch folk dance is fun to watch. The men and women dress up in traditional Dutch costumes. Each province in the Netherlands has its own style of dress, so the caps and shawls might be a bit different. I did locate this video obviously shot in the Netherlands. Enjoy it! Next time: how klompen are made!

I’ve seen this a few times, including at Calvin College. Some of my roommates knew the dances. Guess where my last name originated? 🙂
