Jonalyn continues to blow us away with the progress she is making right now. She is reading small books like: “This is a red leaf. This is a green leaf. Leaves fall down. This is a rake. This is a leaf pile.” I am just one proud Mama. She has quite a number of books like this that she can read. Yes, read! Honestly, as we tried to deal with her disabilities and prepare ourselves for the worst, we didn’t dare to dream that she would be able to read. As usual, she is proving us wrong.
At church, I put together a children’s bulletin. They have an activity they have to use their Bibles and the pastor’s text for the day to complete. Then there is a little game related to the sermon – maze or word search or hidden pictures or something like that. On the back, each letter of the alphabet is listed and they have to listen to the pastor and write down words they hear him say that start with each of the letters. Anyway, that’s a long introduction to Jonalyn’s latest accomplishment. She was working on the sheet before the service and when I sat down, she showed me her work. Next to the letter M, so wrote “my”.
I thought I heard the Hallelujah Chorus in the background 😉 My, oh my. She connected the letter M with the first sound in the word my. This is such a huge accomplishment for anyone learning to decode words. Up to this point, all of her words are sight words. Great, but the ability to decode words is even better.
So praise the Lord with us. He is pouring out his blessings on our little girl.
