When we brought Jonalyn home almost five years ago, we had to come to grips with the extent of her disabilities. Yes, we wanted to push her to succeed, so that she would reach the limits of her potential. At the same time, we needed to be realistic about her limitations. We had to cross brain surgeon off the list of possible careers for her 😉
We live by the motto, “Expect the best, prepare for the worst.”
On Friday, Jonalyn had the day off from school, the other two kids had school, and Doug was gone hunting. That meant she had to come to the office with me. She played on her iPad and in the nursery and had lunch before becoming board. She watched me fold bulletins – 250 of them – each with an insert.
“I help, Mommy?”
Umm, that would be great, but what little job did I have for her? I decided to show her how to stuff bulletins, figuring that she would struggle with it and lose interest after a few. Boy, did she surprise me.
I showed her what to do – ONCE. That stinker picked it up right away. Sure, there were a few bulletins that didn’t have any inserts and a couple that had two, but she did great. She ended up stuffing all 250 bulletins. And saving me a good deal of time.
What she proved to us on Friday is that one day, she will be able to be trained for some type of vocation. She will be a contributing member of society. She has so much untapped potential. Hmm, maybe we should put brain surgeon back on the list 🙂
