I’ve been having some fun in the kitchen and experimenting with new recipes. This one isn’t a new recipe, but it’s a new technique.
For years I’ve hated making pie crusts because they never turned out. And I don’t like the taste of store bought crust. As a result, I never made pies very often.
Over time, I’ve gotten better at making the crust. I’ve learned to add the right amount of water and have learned how to roll it out and transfer it to a pie plate. For inquiring minds, I use a pastry cloth dusted with flour to roll it out. I then gently roll the crust around my rolling pin to transfer it.
Getting a nice edge on the crust was another story. No matter what I tried, it didn’t turn out nice. Ever. Then on Pinterest, I saw this great idea. Braid the crust! I trimmed the edges, rolled that into a ball, cut it into three pieces and rolled those into snakes, just like we did with Play-doh when we were little. Then I braided it. What do you think?
That’s blueberry pie, in case you were wondering. I need a touch more practice to make the crust perfect, but it’s the best I’ve ever done.
What new kitchen techniques have you learned? Please share!
