This week’s word is intrepid. Merriam-Webster defines intrepid as: characterized by resolute fearlessness, fortitude, and endurance.
Writers need to be intrepid. It takes courage to submit a proposal. That’s your baby going out into the world to be critique. Fearlessness is required. Endurance, too. My WWII novel has been out there since July 2011 and my agents and I still haven’t heard from all of the publishers.
Mothers/parents need to be intrepid. Having kids is frightening in a way. You hope and pray that you raise them well. Fortitude. Endurance. All required to be a parent. Parenting is an 18 year long process. In our case, a life-time process. And I’ve been told it never ends, even for our average kids.
If you think about it, you need to be intrepid in your marriage, too. Often these days, couples don’t show much endurance. As soon as things get rough, they want out. Just like parenting, marriage is a long-term commitment. You need to be fearless and have fortitude.
I need to be more intrepid in all areas of my life. Over the weekend, Alyssa baked snickerdoodles and we brought a batch to our new neighbors. Going to meet strangers was out of our comfort zone. But we were intrepid. Several times, I wanted to turn around and trash the entire idea. Eat all the cookies ourselves đ But I got up my fortitude and we did it. And lived to tell about it.
