With all of the kids in school all day, we don’t know what goes on during their days like we used to. It’s been the hardest thing about putting them in school. We have dinner together as a family almost every night. It’s rare that one of us is missing. I think that is so important. To help them open up about their lives, inside of giving us the standard “Not much” when we ask what happened, we go around the table every night and ask,”What was the best part of your day?” Even Jonalyn gets in on the act. She will raise her hand and grunt until we call on her! She’s getting pretty good about giving understandable answers. Everyone has to say something. There had to be something good about your day. Yes, the parents get in on the act, too.
Yesterday, we added another question to the mix. Brian may go on a mission’s trip next summer. In order to do so, he needs to prove that he’s been doing “missionary” things all year. Our new question: what nice thing did you do for someone today? It really makes you think. And go out of your way to be kind to someone, to show the love of Christ to them. I think it will be a great exercise. I really look forward to dinner time now.

We used to always do “Thorns and Roses” but have fallen away, but I really like the “How have you been nice to someone” question. 🙂
