President Ob*ma made a very insensitive comment on The Ton*ght Show last night about Special Ol*mpics. He joked that his poor bowling score was Special Ol*mpics like. It upset me on a couple of fronts. First of all, he is the President of the United States and I feel he didn’t represent one segment of the population in a positive light. No one would stand for that type of joking about any other minority group. Secondly, the reference was glib. It rolled effortlessly off of his tongue. Almost like he’d said it before. He didn’t search for words and make a poor choice on the spur of the moment. Contrast that with this video from Sarah P*lin about Special Ol*mpics. It brought me to tears. Yes, Jonalyn is my special special child, my “perfect” child. I don’t want to get political here. I’m just contrasting something insensitive with something beautiful and profound. Enjoy.
