I can’t believe I forgot the best thing that happened to us that day. The ice cream party at the orphanage was over and we were getting ready to leave. The caregivers came with all of these gifts for us. We were so touched because they had already given us the greatest gift – Jonalyn. There were packages of dried mangos, a bag of fresh mangos (we had to give these to the guest house kitchen because we knew we’d never get them into the States), mango pudding, boxes of polvoron (yummy cookies that are a special treat at Christmas there)in a variety of flavors including plain, cashew, and cookies and cream. Then they handed me a plastic shopping bag and I made the mistake of looking into it. There was a purse. I was overwhelmed by their thoughtfulness and generosity. These people, who had so little, thought of me and my plight and wanted to help me. Of course, the emotions of the past week rushed in on me and I started to weep. I didn’t want to upset anyone, so I fled to the bathroom. Just at that time, Jonalyn had to say good-bye to Mama Linda and they were both very emotional. I left poor Doug on his own to deal with it. Finally, Jonalyn calmed down and by the time I got back they were putting her into the car with a carton of chocolate milk. That made everything all better. Still, a year later, I’m touched by the giving attitude of these people who gave so much to my daughter for five years.
